Submarine Base (1943) follows the story of Jim Taggert, a ship engineer who is rescued from a torpedoed vessel by Joe Morgan, a former American gangster turned fisherman. Morgan operates from a secluded island off the coast of South America, using the Halfway House, run by the parents of Maria Styx, as his base. The Halfway House serves as a bar and dance resort for local planters and traders. Taggert, along with a group of American entertainers, finds himself effectively trapped at the resort. As Taggert observes Morgan's activities in a secluded cove, he discovers that Morgan is supplying German U-boat commanders with torpedoes. Unbeknownst to Taggert, Morgan has equipped these torpedoes with timed devices that cause them to explode at sea, sinking the U-boats.
