Cartas a Elena (2012) unfolds in the scenic Copper Canyon of Chihuahua, Mexico, where a young orphan named Emilio is taken in by a kind-hearted mailman named Teo. Together, they traverse the countryside, not only delivering mail but also reading letters aloud and taking dictation for the largely illiterate villagers. Emilio swiftly learns to read and write, but the grim tales of hardship from relatives who have migrated to Denver, Colorado, in search of a better life, leave him disheartened. When Teo becomes incapacitated, Emilio assumes the mail route and, with boundless creativity, transforms the letters into uplifting and hopeful narratives. The village undergoes a remarkable transformation as the elders, once mired in despair and loneliness, find newfound joy and enthusiasm in the "supposed" successes of their loved ones in the United States. However, their newfound happiness is short-lived as they begin to notice the repetitive nature of the joyful stories.
