Madness of the Heart (1949) follows the tumultuous journey of Lydia Garth, who encounters Paul de Vandiere, a French aristocrat. Their budding romance is overshadowed by Lydia's recurring episodes of blurred vision. Paul departs for France, vowing to return and wed Lydia, but during his absence, she loses her sight entirely. With no prospect of recovery, Lydia joins a convent, only to realize she lacks the calling for a life of piety. She eventually marries Paul, but faces relentless opposition from Verite Faimont, a neighbor deeply attached to Paul. Verite's schemes temporarily shatter their marriage, leaving the question: can a miracle restore Lydia's vision and mend their broken bond?
