Muriel, or the Time of Return (1963) unfolds in the coastal town of Boulogne, where Hélène operates a business selling antique furniture and resides with her stepson, Bernard, who has recently returned from his military service in Algiers. An unexpected visitor arrives in the form of Hélène's former lover, Alphonse, accompanied by his niece Françoise, who has also returned from Algiers where Alphonse managed a café. Bernard mentions his fiancée, Muriel, a woman Hélène has yet to meet. The story, much like memory and intention, is fragmented, clouded by guilt, misunderstandings, and missed opportunities. Illusions are shattered, and change is constant. As Hélène and Alphonse attempt to rekindle their relationship, the characters' disoriented states hint at an impending tragic outcome. The question lingers: can anyone truly understand another person?
