Once Upon a Time in the Battlefield (2003) is set in the tumultuous 600s, amidst the constant conflicts between the three kingdoms of Baekche, Koguryo, and Shilla, which together form the modern-day Korean peninsula. The ruler of Shilla, King Kim Choon-Chu, forms strategic alliances with the powerful Tang dynasty, present-day China. He dispatches his esteemed general, Kim Yu-Sin, to negotiate with Tang's general. Tang, leveraging its superior power, demands that Shilla pay tribute by July 10th to solidify their new alliance. However, for Shilla to deliver the tribute, they must traverse the territories of Baekche and Koguryo, both of which are staunchly defended. Anticipating a potential alliance between Tang and Shilla, Baekche and Koguryo refuse Shilla passage. This defiance provokes Tang, who then aligns with Shilla and launches an offensive against the weaker and more corrupt of the two kingdoms, Baekche.
