Challenge to Lassie (1949) is set in Edinburgh during the year 1860, where a shepherd named Jock Gray discovers a stray Collie puppy. After realizing the puppy is unclaimed, he adopts her and names her Lassie. The two form an unbreakable bond, but their happiness is short-lived when Jock passes away and is laid to rest in an unmarked grave. Lassie, faithful to the end, begins to spend her nights in the churchyard, close to Jock's final resting place. John Traill, a close friend of Jock, attempts to find a suitable home for Lassie, but she consistently escapes and overcomes any barriers to return to Jock's grave. The situation reaches a critical point when a local magistrate issues an order to have Lassie destroyed for lacking a license, prompting Traill to appeal to a higher court.
