Something Wild (1961) follows the harrowing journey of Mary Ann Robinson, a young woman residing in The Bronx, New York, with her anxious, domineering mother and well-meaning but ineffective stepfather. One fateful night, Mary Ann is assaulted while walking home. Keeping the traumatic event a secret, she flees to Manhattan, renting a rundown apartment and securing a job at a dime store. Overwhelmed by the city's harshness and her own anguish, Mary Ann attempts to end her life by jumping off the Manhattan Bridge. Her attempt is thwarted by Mike, a garage mechanic who brings her to his modest basement apartment nearby. Initially grateful for Mike's help, Mary Ann's gratitude turns to fear when he refuses to let her leave. The question lingers: is Mike her savior or another predator?
