Mal (1999) is a cinematic exploration of modern life in Lisbon, focusing on an Irish woman named Cathy who is deeply in love with her Portuguese lawyer husband, Pedro. Unbeknownst to Cathy, Pedro is involved in a series of affairs. Meanwhile, Cathy becomes involved in helping a young delinquent overcome his heroin addiction, while the youth's desperate mother becomes entangled with a peculiar religious cult. The narrative also delves into the story of an elderly man who is nearly driven to madness by the grief of losing his granddaughter at a train station, and a struggling jeweler who guides the young girl to a hotel room.
