Amadeus (1984) unfolds in the opulent setting of 18th-century Austria, where an aged man, the obscure composer Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), is discovered by his servant with a self-inflicted throat wound. Salieri, a contemporary and rival of the now-celebrated but once-maligned composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce), recounts his tumultuous relationship with Mozart from his cell in an asylum. He confesses to a priest (Herman Meckler) his role in the tragic fate of the prodigiously talented yet troubled young musician.
