You Can't Take it With You (1938) follows the story of Alice Sycamore, a typist who is deeply in love with her employer, Tony Kirby. Tony is the vice-president of a formidable corporation owned by his ambitious father, Anthony P. Kirby. Anthony Sr. is on the verge of securing a monopoly in the arms trade and requires the purchase of a final residence within a twelve-block area, which happens to be owned by Alice's grandfather, Martin Vanderhof. Martin is the head of a chaotic and eccentric family that values enjoyment and camaraderie over wealth. When Tony proposes to Alice, she insists that her unconventional family must meet the pretentious Kirbys. Tony agrees and visits Alice's family with his parents a day before the planned meeting. This encounter leads to an unavoidable clash of social classes and lifestyles, causing the Kirbys to disdain the Sycamores and ultimately leading Alice to break off her engagement with Tony, significantly altering the lives of the Kirby family.
