Bodyguards and Assassins (2009) is set in 1905, focusing on the pivotal moment when Sun Yat-sen, referred to as "Sun Wen" in the film, plans to visit Hong Kong to strategize with fellow Tongmenghui members about overthrowing the Qing Dynasty. The Empress Dowager Cixi dispatches a team of assassins, led by Yan Xiaoguo, to eliminate Sun. Revolutionary Chen Shaobai arrives in Hong Kong ahead of Sun's visit to meet Li Yutang, a businessman supporting the revolutionaries financially. As Sun Wen's arrival nears, chaos erupts in Hong Kong with Chen Shaobai's associates being murdered and Chen himself kidnapped during an assault. Li Yutang, after the British authorities shut down a newspaper agency, publicly endorses the revolutionaries. He assembles a diverse group, including rickshaw pullers, hawkers, and a beggar, to act as bodyguards for Sun Wen. Li's son, Li Chongguang, is chosen to serve as a decoy for Sun Wen, aiming to mislead the assassins and ensure Sun's safe departure from Hong Kong.
