Julia (2008) follows the tumultuous life of Julia, portrayed by Tilda Swinton, a 40-year-old woman grappling with alcoholism and a series of personal demons. Julia is characterized by her manipulative behavior, unreliability, and a reputation for deceit, yet she maintains a striking presence. Her life revolves around a vintage 1979 Chrysler New Yorker, vodka, and occasional fleeting encounters. Despite her struggles, she manages to sustain herself through a series of low-paying jobs. As her life becomes increasingly isolated, the only person who shows her genuine affection and offers help is her former boyfriend, Mitch. However, Julia dismisses his efforts, convinced that she is a failure and not responsible for the chaos in her life.
Inspired by John Cassavetes' film "GLORIA," director Erick Zonca crafts a gripping road movie that follows Julia and a young boy named Tom on a journey to Mexico. In a moment of clarity, Julia realizes the bleak path ahead and, driven by desperation and financial need, turns to crime as a means of escape. However, her plans quickly unravel, forcing her to go on the run.
