Afrique 50 (S) (1950) is the pioneering French anti-colonialist documentary. Initially commissioned by the French League of Schooling to highlight the educational endeavors in the French colonies of West Africa, the film took a dramatic turn. The young director, just 21 years old, chose to capture the harsh realities: the scarcity of teachers and medical professionals, the atrocities committed by the French Army in the name of France, and the exploitation of the colonized populations. The documentary was banned for four decades, and its director, René Vautier, faced imprisonment for several months.
