Gone With the Wind (1939) unfolds the tale of Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh), a privileged Southern lady who harbors a secret affection for Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard). When she discovers that Ashley is betrothed to Melanie Hamilton (Olivia de Havilland), Scarlett attempts to confess her feelings at a grand gathering. However, Ashley remains steadfast in his commitment to Melanie. Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), who has been eavesdropping on their exchange, vows to keep Scarlett's secret. The festivities are abruptly halted by the news of the Civil War's commencement. As the men rush to enlist, Melanie's younger sibling, Charles, proposes to Scarlett. Despite her lack of romantic feelings for him, she accepts his offer.
