Leathernecking (1930) follows the adventures of Chick Evans, a Marine private stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. Chick becomes smitten with Delphine Witherspoon, a high-society young woman, and devises various schemes to capture her heart. His initial plan involves posing as an officer to secure an invitation to a prestigious social gathering. However, his Marine comrades' unexpected appearance at the party exposes his true rank, leading to an unfavorable impression on Delphine. Feeling disheartened, Chick confides in a mutual friend, Edna, who orchestrates a reunion between Chick and Delphine aboard her yacht at sea. Unfortunately, this encounter also goes awry, prompting Chick to persuade the yacht's captain to stage a shipwreck to buy him more time with Delphine. Tragically, a genuine storm strikes, and the ship is genuinely wrecked, stranding them on a deserted island. On the island, Chick's unwavering determination finally wins Delphine over. Upon their return to Honolulu, Chick is celebrated as a hero and receives a well-deserved promotion to captain.
