Vatel (2000) is set in 1671, during a time of impending conflict with Holland. A destitute prince extends an invitation to Louis XIV for a three-day extravaganza at the opulent Château de Chantilly. The prince's ulterior motive is to secure a commission as a general, aiming to impress the king with his lavish hospitality. The steward, Vatel, a man of integrity, skill, and humble origins, is entrusted with orchestrating the grand festivities. The prince, driven by his desire for status, assigns Vatel tasks that are both menial and dishonorable. As Vatel strives to maintain his dignity, he becomes captivated by Anne de Montausier, the king's latest mistress. Anne, in turn, is drawn to Vatel's authenticity and his unwavering commitment to his principles amidst the harsh realities of court politics. The narrative explores whether the two can navigate the treacherous waters of their circumstances without being harmed.
