The Mind Reader (1933) follows the story of Chandler, a cunning trickster, and his accomplice Frank, who devise a scheme to exploit the public's fascination with the supernatural. They create a psychic act, capitalizing on the fact that Americans had spent a staggering $125 million on mind-readers and astrology. As they travel the carnival circuit, Chandler, now going by the stage name Chandra, becomes entangled in a romantic relationship with one of his targets, Sylvia. However, their love is put to the test when Chandler's deceptions lead to unfortunate consequences for others, prompting Sylvia to urge him to abandon his dishonest ways.
