The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947) begins in the early 20th century, as the recently widowed Lucy Muir, along with her teenage daughter Anna and loyal maid Martha, relocates from her oppressive in-laws' home in London to a coastal cottage in Whitecliff-by-the-Sea. Ignoring the rental agent's warnings, Lucy chooses the seemingly charming Gull Cottage, which is rumored to be haunted by its former resident, Captain Daniel Gregg. Upon moving in, Lucy encounters Captain Gregg's ghost and, instead of being frightened, forms an unusual friendship with him. They agree that he will remain unseen by Anna. As their bond deepens, Lucy finds herself torn between her growing affection for the captain and her need to move forward with her life, including potential romantic interests.
