Gilles (2005) follows the story of a dedicated father, Bert, a grocer from Flemish Brussels, who channels his unfulfilled dreams of playing for the national football team into his son Gilles. Bert relentlessly trains his 12-year-old son, hoping to see him succeed where he could not due to a knee injury. During a pivotal match where a scout is present, Bert's intense anger at the referee leads to a heart attack, leaving Gilles devastated. As the family's grocery store and his mother are gradually taken over by an accountant who knows nothing about football, Gilles struggles with his father's absence and his own football ambitions. A foot injury threatens to derail Gilles' dreams, either delaying his progress or ending it completely if not properly addressed.
