Antigone (1992) is a cinematic adaptation inspired by Friedrich Hölderlin's German translation of texts by Sophocles and Bertolt Brecht. The narrative centers around Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, who defies the tyrannical decree of Creon, the ruler of Thebes. Creon's edict mandates that the body of Antigone's brother, Polynices, remain unburied due to his betrayal of the city. Despite the risk, Antigone secretly buries her brother's body and is subsequently arrested and sentenced to be sealed in a cave. Haemon, Creon's son and Antigone's betrothed, vehemently opposes his father's decision and curses him. The gods eventually turn against Creon, who learns that Haemon has taken his own life at the feet of the hanged Antigone.
