Una ciutat de mussols (2021) delves into the lives of LGBTIQ+ individuals in Tarragona during the 1970s through the personal accounts of twelve key figures. This documentary sheds light on the challenges and repression faced by the community during the final years of the dictatorship, the transitional period, and the early days of democracy. It pays homage to the pioneers who paved the way for the freedoms enjoyed today. Set in Tarragona at the close of the dictatorship, the film follows a group of gay men who rent an apartment in the Parte Alta to live freely and openly. Meanwhile, a young woman faces threats from her lover's father, a civil guard who monitors her lesbian daughter's activities. This era is marked by the "law of vagrants and thugs," where love is criminalized based on societal norms. Despite the hardships, the first LGBTIQ+ bars open in the city, and clandestine outings to Barcelona become common. The documentary features Quim, Carla, Fina, Patxitxa, Toñi, Sendo, Edu, Gelo, Núria, Ció, Dani, and Manolo, who share their experiences of navigating life in Tarragona during this tumultuous period. Under the watchful gaze of owls, these characters navigate a city that is both vibrant and secretive, always with hidden dangers. The testimonies are poignant and sometimes overwhelming, as the joy of liberation and fulfillment is intertwined with the struggles of the time.
