This Is the Life (1944) follows the journey of Angela, an 18-year-old woman from a small New England town, who receives an inheritance and decides to move to New York City. Her stated purpose is to receive voice training, but her true motivation is to pursue Major Hilary Jarret, an Army surgeon with whom she has developed a strong infatuation. Angela's departure leaves her childhood friend, Jimmy Plum, feeling heartbroken. Dr. Plum, Jimmy's father, sends his son on a mission to New York, where Jimmy uncovers Angela's misconception that she is engaged to Jarret. In the city, Jimmy reconnects with a group of entertainers, including Sally McGuire, who tries to comfort him. Jimmy also encounters Harriet, Jarret's ex-wife and a renowned photographer. Jimmy orchestrates a meeting between Jarret, Harriet, and Angela, which helps Angela realize that Jarret is not the right person for her. Meanwhile, Jimmy is drafted into the Army.
