Shoeshine (Shoe-Shine) (1946) is set in post-WWII Rome, where two young shoeshine boys, Pasquale and Giuseppe, dream of owning a horse after watching races near the Italian capital. Pasquale, an orphan, and his younger companion Giuseppe, encounter Attilio, Giuseppe's older brother, and his dubious associate on a boat along the Tiber River. The boys agree to transport illicit goods for a fortune-teller in exchange for a commission. However, after the transaction, Attilio's gang, posing as police, extorts the fortune-teller. With the money from Attilio, the boys manage to secure their horse and stable it in Trastevere. Unfortunately, the fortune-teller identifies the boys, leading to their arrest and confinement in an overcrowded juvenile prison, where they are separated.
