The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970) follows Sam Dalmas, a young American author, as he prepares to depart from Rome and head back to the United States. On the eve of his departure, he becomes an eyewitness to a violent assault on a woman named Monica Ranieri. The attacker stabs Monica and flees into the night. The case is assigned to Detective Superintendent Morosini, who reveals to Sam that a serial killer might be at large, potentially responsible for the murders of three other women and the attempted murder of Monica. Intrigued and concerned, Sam postpones his return to the U.S. and begins his own investigation into the crimes.
