Way Down South (1939) unfolds in the antebellum South, where a plantation owner's untimely demise leaves his entire estate, including his enslaved workers, to his young heir. Unlike his father, who treated his slaves with a degree of kindness, the executor of the estate is a corrupt and cruel man. He subjects the slaves to brutal beatings and schemes to sell the estate and its people to fund a lavish life in France with his mistress. The young boy, however, is determined to preserve his father's legacy and keep the slave families together. He embarks on a quest to find an ally who can help him outmaneuver the executor's nefarious plans.
