The Puffy Chair (2005)

The Puffy Chair (2005) follows the journey of Josh, a meticulous and somewhat controlling individual who values punctuality and frugality. His life is in disarray, having failed as an indie rocker and struggling as a booking agent in NYC. In a bid to salvage some semblance of victory, Josh decides to buy a 1985 Lazy Boy recliner, reminiscent of one his father had, from eBay. He plans to drive cross-country to deliver it as a surprise birthday gift to his dad. Along the way, he intends to stay with his girlfriend Emily, who has her own quirks and a penchant for romantic movies. Rhett, Josh's younger brother, who has a unique perspective on life and a penchant for filming lizards, joins the trip. The trio, along with the oversized purple chair, embark on a journey filled with tension and self-discovery. As they navigate the challenges of their cramped van and personal conflicts, one of them must ultimately leave before the trip concludes. This road trip comedy-drama, directed by the Duplass Brothers, debuted at Sundance 2005 and was recognized with two Independent Spirit Award nominations. It was later acquired by Roadside Attractions/Netflix for theatrical distribution in January 2006.
