The Orphan of Anyang (2001) follows the story of a struggling prostitute from the Northeast who, in a desperate bid to survive, leaves her newborn baby behind. An unemployed factory worker, seeing an opportunity, takes in the child for the monthly stipend of 200 yuan (approximately $37 Canadian) promised by the mother. His initial attempts at parenting are a mix of awkwardness and endearing moments. Over time, a bond forms between the worker and the mother, hinting at a unique and unconventional family dynamic. However, complications arise when the woman's pimp, a local criminal, discovers the child's existence and his own terminal cancer diagnosis. Driven by a mix of paternal instincts and desperation, he insists on adopting the baby, resorting to threats of violence to achieve his goal.
