Journey to the Sun (1999) follows Mehmet, a young Turkish man who has recently moved from the village of Tire to Istanbul. He secures a position hunting for water leaks beneath the city's streets. A peculiar chain of events leads to Mehmet being mistaken for a Kurd, resulting in his imprisonment and severe beating. After his release a week later, he is shunned as a Kurd, losing his apartment, job, and ultimately his girlfriend, Arzu. When a Kurdish friend, Berzan, is killed during a street protest sparked by a hunger strike, Mehmet embarks on a journey to return Berzan's body to his home village near the Iraqi border, uncovering the reasons behind the Kurdish refugee crisis.
