The Talk of the Town (1942) follows the story of Leopold Dilg, an accused arsonist who escapes from jail and seeks refuge in the home of his old friend and sweetheart, Nora. Nora, who is renting a farmhouse to Supreme Court candidate Michael Lightcap, hides Dilg in the attic. The next day, she introduces Dilg as the gardener. Lightcap, intrigued by Dilg's insightful comments on the law, begins to suspect that there is more to the gardener than meets the eye. Nora and Dilg work together to convince Lightcap that Dilg was wrongfully accused. As they navigate the complexities of their situation, they must evade the police, attempt to apprehend the real criminals, and deal with the romantic tensions that arise as both men develop feelings for Nora. The film features two different endings, one where Nora chooses Dilg and another where she leaves with Lightcap, with the classic comedic conclusion being the latter.
