The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926)

The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) is a pioneering 1926 German animated fairytale film directed by Lotte Reiniger, renowned for being the oldest surviving animated feature film. Although earlier animated features were created in Argentina by Quirino Cristiani, they are unfortunately considered lost. This film showcases Reiniger's innovative silhouette animation technique, which involved manipulating cutouts made from cardboard and thin sheets of lead under a camera, similar to Wayang shadow puppets but animated frame by frame. The original prints of the film featured vibrant color tinting. Notable avant-garde animators who contributed to this film include Walter Ruttmann, Berthold Bartosch, and Carl Koch. The narrative draws from elements of "The 1001 Arabian Nights," specifically "The Story of Prince Ahmed and the Fairy Paribanou" as featured in Andrew Lang's "The Blue Fairy Book." The plot follows Prince Achmed, who, with the help of Aladdin, the Witch of the Fiery Mountain, and a magical horse, reclaims a magic lamp and defeats an African sorcerer. The film's climax features a spectacular battle between "die Hexe" (the witch) and "der afrikanische Zauberer" (the African sorcerer), showcasing their fantastical transformations. In the end, Aladdin marries Dinarsade (Achmed's sister and daughter of the Caliph), Achmed marries Pari Banu, the African sorcerer is vanquished, and the quartet returns to the Caliph's kingdom.
