A Trip to the Moon (S) (1902) follows a group of six daring astronomers who embark on an ambitious journey from Earth to the Moon. They construct a bullet-shaped space capsule and a colossal cannon to launch it into space. With the assistance of a chorus of beautiful women, the capsule is fired towards the Moon, where it strikes the Man in the Moon in the eye. Upon landing, the explorers take a nap and dream of celestial dancers, who cause a snowfall that awakens them. They discover giant mushrooms and encounter Selenites, alien inhabitants of the Moon. The astronomers face challenges as they try to fend off the Selenites, eventually capturing their leader and escaping back to Earth. The film culminates in a celebratory parade honoring their safe return, though parts of this final scene are missing. Directed by Georges Méliès, this 14-minute silent film is a pioneering work of science fiction, inspired by Jules Verne's "From the Earth to the Moon" and H.G. Wells' "First Men in the Moon."
