Without Anesthesia (1978) follows a renowned Polish journalist who finds himself in a precarious situation when he demonstrates his extensive political acumen on a televised Q&A program focused on a global conference, featuring a panel of journalists. His adversaries seize the opportunity to strip him of his privileges while he is absent. The jarring realization of being "unwanted" mirrors a profound disillusionment in his personal life: his wife engages in an affair with a jealous younger rival, and after 15 years of marriage and two daughters, she seeks a divorce. She provides no explanations as he struggles to resolve these issues independently. Every step he takes seems to be misguided. He turns to heavy drinking with students who are eager to attend his seminar, only to discover that the class has been canceled. The once charismatic and authoritative journalist is left speechless.
