Live and Become (2005) is set in 1984, during a time when hundreds of thousands of Africans from various countries, devastated by famine, congregated in refugee camps in Sudan. Israel and the United States launched a massive rescue mission, known as Operation Moses, to transport thousands of Ethiopian Jews, known as Falashas, to Israel. A Christian mother, desperate to save her nine-year-old son from starvation and death, disguises him as a Jew. The boy arrives in Israel and, declared an orphan, is adopted by a French Sephardic family residing in Tel Aviv. As he grows up, he grapples with the fear of his dual deception being exposed: he is neither Jewish nor an orphan, but simply of African descent. Throughout his journey, he encounters love, Western culture, and Jewish faith, as well as racism and conflict in the Occupied Territories. He embraces multiple identities—Jewish, Israeli, French, and Tunisian—becoming a metaphorical Tower of Babel. However, he never forgets his true mother, who remained in the camp, and holds onto the secret hope of reuniting with her one day.
