L'amour fou (1969) follows Sébastien, who is helming a theatrical adaptation of Jean Racine’s Greek tragedy "Andromaque," while also starring as the main character, Pyrrhus. As rehearsals unfold under the watchful eye of a film crew, Sébastien's marriage to Claire, who plays the lead role, starts to unravel. Tensions escalate when Sébastien decides to replace Claire with his ex-lover, further complicating their already strained relationship.
