Tiny Furniture (2010) follows the journey of a 22-year-old woman named Aura who finds herself back in her artist mother's TriBeCa loft after a series of setbacks. She arrives with a film theory degree that she finds useless, a modest online presence with 357 hits on her YouTube page, a boyfriend who has left her to find himself at Burning Man, a dying pet hamster, and a sense of defeat. Fortunately, her chaotic childhood best friend is still around, a nearby restaurant is offering employment, and there are potential romantic entanglements nearby. Aura swiftly adapts to her old/new life, taking on a dead-end job as a hostess, attending chilly East Village parties, and engaging in various self-destructive behaviors. She struggles with feelings of inadequacy and competition with her talented teenage sister, seeking solace in desperate acts and desperate relationships. Surrounded by endless possibilities, Aura yearns for guidance on who she truly is.
