Excalibur (1981) is a cinematic journey through the legendary tale of King Arthur, beginning with his miraculous birth and culminating in his fateful confrontation with his illegitimate son, the malevolent Mordred. The narrative unfolds with the enigmatic Necromancer Merlin (Nicol Williamson) presenting the enchanted sword Excalibur to the bellicose Uther Pendragon (Gabriel Byrne) on the condition that he forge peace with his adversary, the duke of Cornwall (Corin Redgrave). Uther initially consents but reneges on his pledge upon seeing the duke's wife, Igraine (Katrine Boorman). With Merlin's aid, Uther assumes the duke's form to be with Igraine, resulting in the birth of Arthur. The infant Arthur is then entrusted to Ector (Clive Swift) by Merlin. Years later, the young Arthur, now a modest squire, extracts Excalibur from the stone where Uther had embedded it, a feat no other could achieve. Guided by Merlin, Arthur weds the enchanting Guenevere (Cherie Lunghi), gains the loyalty of Sir Lancelot (Nicholas Clay), subdues the quarrelsome knights, and establishes the Round Table to unite them. However, Arthur's reign is threatened by his half-sister, Morgana (Helen Mirren), who plots to undermine his rule from the shadows.
