Always: Sunset on Third Street (2005) follows the journey of Mutsuko, a young woman who departs from her small-town life to pursue a job in a prominent automotive company in bustling Tokyo. However, she soon realizes that her employment is actually at a modest auto repair shop run by the temperamental Norifumi Suzuki. The Suzuki household is balanced by the nurturing presence of Norifumi's wife, Tomoe, and their young son, Ippei, who forms an instant bond with Mutsuko. The story unfolds against the backdrop of Tokyo Tower's construction in 1958, symbolizing Japan's post-war resurgence. The neighborhood is filled with individuals striving for improvement, including Hiromi, who transitions from a dancer to a sake bar owner, and Ryunosuke Chagawa, a struggling writer who runs a candy shop. Chagawa's life takes an unexpected turn when he becomes the guardian of Junnosuke, a young boy abandoned by his mother. Junnosuke, an avid reader of Chagawa's adventure stories, begins to idolize him and starts writing his own tales, envisioning a futuristic Japan in the 21st century. These narratives captivate Ippei and their friends, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared dreams.
