Ujala (1959) follows the life of Ramu, a young man residing in a crowded chawl in Parel, Bombay, with his widowed mother, sister Sandhya, and three younger siblings. Ramu ekes out a living using a wooden pushcart. Tragedy strikes when his sister Munni is fatally hit by a car, leading to her hospitalization and eventual demise. Desperate to cremate her, Ramu uses his pushcart for the funeral pyre and turns to a life of crime, joining forces with a Chembur gangster named Kalu to pick pockets. This new path allows him to provide for his family and fund Sandhya's engagement. However, a violent altercation with an associate, Chandu, results in Chandu's death, leaving Ramu consumed by guilt. He resolves to leave his criminal ways behind and secures a job as a knife sharpener. His newfound peace is disrupted by the police investigating Chandu's murder and a missing silver knife, casting Ramu as a prime suspect.
