Empire of the Sun (1987) follows the journey of a privileged British youngster who is abruptly cut off from his family as World War II commences and the Japanese Army takes over British-controlled regions in China. Forced to survive on his own, the boy faces the harsh realities of street life, struggling to find sustenance. His life takes a dramatic turn when he is confined to a Japanese POW camp designated for British civilians. Within the camp, he develops a complex admiration for both the captured American pilots and the Japanese captors. As the war concludes, the boy, now detached from his former life, embarks on a quest to reunite with his parents.
