That Night in Varennes (1982) unfolds in June 1791, as the renowned but controversial novelist Restif de la Bretonne observes Queen Marie-Antoinette’s lady-in-waiting discreetly departing from Paris. This sighting leads him to believe that King Louis XVI and his family have already escaped the city. Driven by his inquisitive nature, he embarks on a journey to confirm his suspicions. Along the way, he encounters the legendary seducer, Casanova. The two men unexpectedly share a coach with the queen’s lady-in-waiting and the American revolutionary, Thomas Paine. As their journey progresses towards Metz, the travelers realize they are trailing another coach, which happens to be carrying the royal family.
