Land of the Pharaohs (1955) is set in ancient Egypt, where Pharaoh Khufu (Jack Hawkins) is driven by an intense desire to amass gold and ensure it accompanies him into the afterlife. He enlists the help of Vashtar (James Robertson Justice), an architect from a people he has enslaved. The deal is to construct an impenetrable tomb in exchange for the slaves' freedom, though Vashtar must sacrifice his life upon completion to keep the tomb's secrets safe. Over the years of construction, the pharaoh imposes heavy tributes on all territories. Nellifer (Joan Collins), the princess and envoy from the impoverished province of Cyprus, offers herself as tribute instead of grain. She becomes the pharaoh's second wife.
