Quills (2000) invites you to a dark and twisted narrative that blends virtue and vice, humor and horror, love and explicit erotica, and the harsh realities of censorship. It delves into the unbreakable spirit of human creativity. This is a fictional account of the final days of the Marquis De Sade, a writer, rebel, and sensualist known for exploring the darkest and most criminal aspects of human desires. He was both reviled as a devilish monster and celebrated as one of the freest spirits the world has ever known. Historical records reveal that in his last decade, the Marquis, whose name became synonymous with sadistic lust, fell in love. The libertine who championed unrestrained expression was nearly silenced. Exiled to the Charenton Asylum for the insane, the Marquis De Sade continued to pen his blasphemous novels until a new doctor arrived to "cure" him of his wicked desires. Where history ends, Quills (2000) embarks on a daring journey through the corridors of Charenton Asylum and into the Marquis De Sade’s forbidden cell, where everything but the act of creation could be confined. Director Philip Kaufman ("The Right Stuff," "The Unbearable Lightness of Being") brings to life the Marquis De Sade’s alluring and sinister world with a cautionary tale about the consequences when doctors attempt to suppress the darkness. The screenplay, by Doug Wright, is based on his award-winning play, which critics hailed as a provocative comedic thriller and a modern allegory about freedom of expression and civil liberties. Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush stars as the witty yet wicked Marquis De Sade, residing in exile in his luxurious suite at the Charenton Asylum. Here, he forms a bond with the progressive young asylum director Abbe Coulmier (Joaquin Phoenix), a forward-thinking man who advocates for humane treatment of his patients and encourages creative expression. In this environment, the Marquis also develops a friendship with the attractive young laundress Madeleine (Kate Winslet), who assists him in smuggling his prolific writings for publication and whose innocent affections are also cherished by the conflicted Abbe.
