The Decline of the American Empire (1986) explores the lives of four distinct Montreal university professors who convene at a sprawling countryside residence to prepare a meal. The group consists of Remy (a married man), Claude (a homosexual), Pierre (in a relationship with a girlfriend), and Alain (a bachelor). They engage in candid conversations about intimacy, the female form, and their personal experiences. Simultaneously, their four female companions—Louise (Remy's wife of 15 years), Dominique (a single woman), Diane (a divorcée), and Danielle (Pierre's girlfriend)—are at a downtown health spa. They, too, delve into topics of sex, the female body, and, predictably, men. As the evening progresses, the two groups reunite at the country house for dinner, where the conversation naturally continues. However, an unexpected ninth guest, Mario, who has a past connection with Diane, joins the gathering and brings a surprising revelation.
