The Magnet (1950) follows the story of Johnny Brent, a young boy who, while confined to quarantine due to scarlet fever, tricks a younger boy into exchanging a magnet for a fake "invisible watch." Johnny then exploits the magnet's power to gain unfair advantages, such as manipulating pinballs on a pinball machine. An eccentric iron lung maker mistakenly believes Johnny has donated the magnet to charity, leading to a series of misunderstandings that elevate Johnny to hero status. Despite his newfound fame, Johnny is plagued by guilt and fears that the police are after him, even imagining he is responsible for the death of a tuberculosis patient. In an attempt to escape, Johnny takes the New Brighton ferry to Liverpool, where he encounters local boys. Initially clashing with them, Johnny wins them over by claiming he is a fugitive wanted for murder. Ultimately, he returns home safely.
