The café owner’s youngest daughter, Rosa, is about to get married. The whole village rejoices with a sense of happiness, which is cut short by the eldest daughter, Caterina’s, personal drama. The morality of the time condemns and does not forgive her fault; getting pregnant and then being abandoned by a wretched man. Forced by her father, Caterina has an abortion. Claudi, a shy, solitary and drunk fisherman, quietly loves Caterina, but their love is endangered by prejudice and by the arrival of a new suitor, an old and rich gentlemam from Banyuls.
