The Day After the Fair (TV)

Set in a country town in Victorian England, Edith, who happens to witness the meeting at Salisbury Fair between Charles, a barrister from London, and Anna, her young maid. Being illiterate, when Charles later writes to Anna, she goes to her employer and asks Edith to help. With her marriage to Arthur a dry and bitter affair, Edith is looking for a way to express her yearning for love, and so evolves a bizarre and unwitting relationship. The drama which grows from this innocent deception reaches its climax when pretence and reality eventually come face to face as the fair returns to town...
