Miéville’s first feature film is an incisive tale of three generations of women - daughter, mother, and grandmother - who form what the director calls "a living chain." The 20-year-old Angèle is studying to become a soprano and struggles with her desire to have a child despite the reluctance of her troubled boyfriend. Her mother, Agnès, is twice her age but still cannot decide between the two men in her life, neither of whom can ease her sense of melancholy or solitude. In turn, Agnès' aged mother Odile, who is tending her own ailing father, is more resigned to loneliness.
