Malefique (2002)

2002 · Movie · 90 min. · France

Malefique (2002) unfolds as a gripping narrative of confined horror, saturated with suspense, claustrophobic distress, and sheer terror. Four inmates stumble upon a journal filled with dark magic spells that promise them a way out. Carrere (Gerald Laroche), accused of corporate fraud, awaits his unfaithful wife to post bail that never comes. His fellow cellmates include Marcus (Clovis Cornillac), a pre-operative transsexual bodybuilder, Daisy (Dimitri Rataud), a mentally challenged insect consumer, and Lasalle (Phillippe Laudenbach), an intellectual convicted of murdering his wife. When a stone slab shifts near Carrere's bunk, they discover a book of strange symbols penned by a 1920s inmate who used the arcane incantations to pass through cell walls. However, their escape plan backfires, trapping them in a nightmarish purgatory where their desires are manipulated by a malevolent force that grants each a solitary wish.
