Kathleen (1941) centers around a 12-year-old girl named Kathleen who resides in a grand house with a nanny, a butler, maids, and a father who is frequently absent due to work. She yearns for a traditional family unit, complete with both a mother and a father, and fabricates stories to her peers about having such a family. This deception prevents her from inviting friends over, as they might discover the truth. Kathleen's relationship with her current nanny, Mrs. Farrell, is strained, leading her father to hire a psychologist, Dr. Kent, to act as her summer caretaker. Meanwhile, her father is considering Lorraine as a potential wife and mother for Kathleen. However, Kathleen is not fond of Lorraine, who reciprocates the coldness. Kathleen begins to see Dr. Kent as the ideal mother figure and a suitable partner for her father.
