Fyodor Protasov, a spendthrift and drunkard, abandons Liza, his wife, and baby son, choosing to cavort most of the time with gypsies. He’s sure that Liza rather find happiness in marrying a safe sort of a man and their mutual friend Victor Karenin, who’s in love with her since childhood. Protasov falls for a gypsy girl Masha, her passionate singing and lovely face. But no one of the three is ready to face a divorce. Which in those times to obtain is nearly impossible a task. Still, Protasov makes a promise to set his wife free, and soon. All what he’s good for is to fake his own suicide
